In honor of yesterday&#8217;s publication of <a title=\"Amazing Spider-Man Issue 700\" href=\"http:\/\/marvel.com\/comic_books\/issue\/40128\/amazing_spider-man_1999_700\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amazing Spider-Man Issue # 700<\/a>, we\u2019re putting Spidey under the microscope.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Untangling Science v. Fantasy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Rather than recreating the wheel, we found a pretty awesome video that does a pretty good job at explaining what we set out to explore in this blog post. Science nerds and comic fans alike will appreciate the high-level examination conducted with the help of a dry-erase board and some handy illustrations:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/o40wD7Nf9oY\" width=\"425\" height=\"350\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Too Long, Didn\u2019t Watch?<\/p>\n<p>Well you redefine lazy, dontcha? Here\u2019s a breakdown of the most salient points about our dearly beloved Peter Parker\u2019s alter-ego.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Genetically-Altered DNA<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Here\u2019s where the science of <a href=\"https:\/\/2023.biowars.com\/blog\/where-to-start-reading-spider-man-comics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spider-Man<\/a> ties in that of Biowars. Both stories involve the invasion of a host: Peter Parker, and Alex Hawkings.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For the spider that bit Parker to alter his DNA, it would have had to release a retrovirus into his system.<\/li>\n<li>Retroviruses contain genetic information that gets inserted into the DNA of cells.<\/li>\n<li>The spider&#8217;s retrovirus would have to invade nearly every cell in Parker\u2019s body \u2013 possible, but unlikely. As for the infected host in Biowars, Alex, we\u2019ll have to wait and see how his body reacts to the invasion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Strength of Silk<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Get this: silk is proportionally stronger (i.e. \u201ctensile strength\u201d) than steel!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spiderwebs 1\/10 of a hair\u2019s width can catch insects flying up to 15 miles per hour.<\/li>\n<li>If a web were an inch thick in diameter, it could stop a fighter jet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Climbing and Super Grip<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Players of <a title=\"POLL RESULTS: 5 Best Comic Book Video Games\" href=\"\/blog\/5-best-comic-book-video-games\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spiderman2<\/a> can attest to Spidey\u2019s unbelievable slinging agility.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spiders can lift up to 50x their body weight.<\/li>\n<li>Tiny hairs on spider legs create electro-static forces that allow them to stick to surfaces with strength up to 170x their own weight.<\/li>\n<li>To scale for size and mass, extra proteins (actin and myosin) would be required for Spidey\u2019s increased muscle strengthening and contracting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Spidey-Sense<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Spider hairs, or setae, are extremely receptive to air pressure changes and vibrations<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s not likely that the intentions of far-away evildoers would be detected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>How About Doctor Octopus?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This real-life <a title=\"Spider-Man Like Regenerative Medicine\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2012\/07\/120724171229.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">regenerative medicine<\/a> researcher is conducting similar \u2013 yet safer \u2013 experiments.
