Read the BIOWARS comic book for free!<\/a><\/p>\n Agatha Harkness is a powerful witch that first appeared in <\/span><\/b>Fantastic Four #94<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/a> in 1970.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Her character was created by writer Stan Lee and artist <\/span>Jack Kirby<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Agatha was introduced as the governess of young Franklin Richards \u2014 the son of Reed and Sue Richards of <\/span>Fantastic Four<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Of course, Franklin\u2019s parents had no idea Agatha was a witch, but luckily for them, she was a good one.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n When the Frightful Four \u2014 a group of villains \u2014 tried to kidnap Franklin, Agatha saved the child and used her magic to ward off the attackers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n She admitted to the Fantastic Four that she, indeed, was a witch and started helping them battle the bad guys.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Some other comic book issues tell us that Agatha has been around for much longer than several centuries. In fact, it turns out that she was <\/span>alive 500 years before <\/span><\/b>Atlantis<\/span><\/b><\/a> sank<\/span><\/b>, meaning that she\u2019s <\/span>thousands of years old<\/span><\/b>!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Although Agatha was introduced as a good witch, not everyone in her family was as kind as her.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n We\u2019ve learned that her son \u2014 <\/span>Nicholas Scratch<\/span><\/b> \u2014 is a <\/span>supervillain<\/span><\/a> that often battled the Fantastic Four.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n His name is a combo of slang terms for the <\/span>Devil<\/span><\/b> \u2014 Old Nick and Old Scratch \u2014 and his actions definitely justify the name he was given.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Scratch became the leader of <\/span>New Salem<\/span><\/b>, Colorado \u2014 a secret community of witches and other magic users.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Does Salem ring any bells?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Yep, it\u2019s the place where the <\/span>Salem witch trials<\/span><\/a> took place between 1692 and 1693.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Agatha left New Salem because she wanted to <\/span>live among the \u201cregular\u201d people<\/span><\/b>. That\u2019s when she became a nanny to Franklin, so Scratch took over the role of a leader.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n With Agatha gone, Scratch convinced the residents of New Salem that his mother betrayed them and spilled their secrets to the Fantastic Four.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Everyone was enraged, so they <\/span>kidnaped Agatha<\/span><\/b> (and Franklin) and wanted to execute her.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The Fantastic Four jumped to Agatha\u2019s rescue and revealed that it was Scratch who made them aware of New Salem \u2014 not his mother.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The community turned against Scratch and banished him to the Dark Realm, which exists outside of time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Agatha stripped her son of the powers he once had. [Photo Credit: Marvel<\/a>]<\/p><\/div>Of course, that wasn\u2019t the end of the story for Scratch.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n From the Dark Realm, he continued to cause chaos by instructing his seven children (known as <\/span>Salem\u2019s Seven<\/span><\/b>) to take over New Salem. He attempted to mentally control the Fantastic Four and use them to conquer the world, but Agatha stopped him and kept him away in the Dark Realm.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Talk about a turbulent mother-son relationship, huh?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n At one point, Salem\u2019s Seven managed to murder Agatha by burning her at the stake, but she came back alive and well after some time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n For most comic book fans, the most interesting part of Agatha\u2019s journey has been her relationship with <\/span>Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a., <\/span><\/b>Scarlet Witch<\/span><\/b><\/a>.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n When Agatha met the young heroine, she realized how powerful Wanda was and wanted to help her better control her abilities and improve her witchcraft skills.
