Read the BioWars comic book!<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>What Are T-Cells?<\/h2>\n<p>T-Cells are a <strong>type of white blood cell, i.e., leukocytes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>They belong to the <a href=\"https:\/\/2023.biowars.com\/blog\/lymphocytes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lymphocyte<\/a> subtype, so they\u2019re often called <strong>T-lymphocytes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alongside T-Cells, lymphocytes also include <a href=\"https:\/\/2023.biowars.com\/blog\/what-are-b-cells\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">B-Cells<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/2023.biowars.com\/blog\/natural-killer-cells\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Natural Killer Cells<\/a> (NKC).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your NKCs participate in your body\u2019s <strong>innate immune response<\/strong>. That means they are a part of your body\u2019s first-responders club, i.e., they are among the first to face the pathogens attacking you.<\/p>\n<p>They don\u2019t do it alone, though! If need be, they\u2019re willing to sacrifice themselves not just for the good of the entire Bioverse but also for the wellbeing of other BioWarriors!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"mceNonEditable cta-custom\" href=\"https:\/\/2023.biowars.com\/characters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet the Bioverse warriors!<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Where Are T-Cells Made?<\/h2>\n<p>T-Cells are made in <strong>the bone marrow<\/strong> \u2014 the gelatinous tissue inside your bones.<\/p>\n<p>They come from <strong>hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs)<\/strong>. These cells are produced in the bone marrow and generate all other cells in your body, including red and white blood cells, and platelets.<\/p>\n<p>Once T-Cells are generated, they leave their home and move to the <strong>thymus<\/strong> \u2014 a gland between your lungs.<\/p>\n<p>The reason they go there is that they\u2019re drawn to it by <strong>chemokines<\/strong> \u2014 a type of cytokine (tiny proteins secreted by your cells) made by some thymus cells.<\/p>\n<p>For T-Cells, <strong>the thymus is the place that\u2019s either going to make them or break them<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Since T-Cells play a huge role in your immune system, your body needs to know if they can handle such a responsible job.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why it puts them through <strong>thymic selection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>What Happens During Thymic Selection?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Thymic selection is the process during which T-Cells go through positive and negative selection.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Positive thymic selection<\/strong> occurs when <strong>T-Cells can recognize molecules of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Why is this important?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Because the whole point of T-Cells is to have them recognize MHCs<\/strong>, i.e., molecules on the pathogen\u2019s surface!<\/p>\n<p>But we\u2019ll talk more about this soon!<\/p>\n<p>For now, you should remember that if T-cells can recognize MHCs attached to peptides, they\u2019ve <strong>passed the test and have gone through positive selection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Negative selection<\/strong> starts with the T-Cells that have passed the test. Your body then needs to make sure these guys won\u2019t attack your own cells, so it has to get rid of the self-reactive bunch!<\/p>\n<p>The reason why the <strong>negative selection is important is that it prevents autoimmune disorders from occurring!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"mceNonEditable cta-custom\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/biowars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Follow us on Instagram and enjoy the latest BioWars updates!<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>How Are T-Cells Activated?<\/h2>\n<p>The activation of T-Cells starts with macrophages.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside <strong>dendritic cells, a.k.a. That happens because <strong>every T-Cell can recognize just a specific antigen!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your T-Cells have a <strong>unique receptor<\/strong> on their surface \u2014 a <strong>TCR<\/strong> \u2014 that reacts only to a specific antigen.<\/p>\n<p>When the two meet, that\u2019s when the T-Cells activate into specific types!<\/p>\n<p>The activation occurs in the <strong>secondary lymphoid organs<\/strong>, including your <strong>spleen, tonsils and lymph nodes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"mceNonEditable cta-custom\" href=\"https:\/\/2023.biowars.com\/blog\/types-of-antibodies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How do antibodies fight pathogens &amp; keep you healthy? Find out!<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>4 Types Of T-Cells<\/h2>\n<p>Your body makes 4 types of T-Cells:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Cytotoxic T-Cells<\/li>\n<li>Helper T-Cells<\/li>\n<li>Regulatory T-Cells<\/li>\n<li>Memory T-Cells<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>1. Cytotoxic T-Cells<\/h3>\n<p>Cytotoxic T-Cells \u2014 CTLs or <strong>CD8+ cells<\/strong> \u2014 have one job only \u2014 <strong>to kill the harmful cells that don\u2019t belong in your body<\/strong>, including viruses and <a href=\"https:\/\/2023.biowars.com\/blog\/the-biology-of-biowars-the-cancer-cell-enigma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cancerous cells<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Due to their innate urge to destroy viruses, they are one of the <strong>key players in your adaptive immune system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The reason they\u2019re also called CD8+ cells is that they express the <strong>CD8 glycoproteins<\/strong> on their surface.<\/p>\n<p>A glycoprotein is a hybrid made up of a <strong>carbohydrate and protein<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>CD8 glycoproteins are important because they <strong>allow CTLs MHCs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TCRs alone aren\u2019t enough to activate T-Cells.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Instead, <strong>their activation is a 2-step process:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>TCR binds to an MHC molecule (CTLs attach to the MHC class I molecule)<\/li>\n<li>CD8+ receptor sends a co-stimulatory signal that locks CTLs to MHC class I molecules<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Once your CTLs bind to MHC I, the destruction of the dangerous imposters begins.<\/p>\n<p>Your cytotoxic T-Cells encourage intruders to perform <strong>apoptosis<\/strong>, i.e., programmed cell death.<\/p>\n<p>And how do they do it?<\/p>\n<p><strong>CTLs can induce programmed cell death in two ways:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>By releasing the protein <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4439970\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">perforin<\/a><\/strong> to punch holes on the surface of target cells; then, they launch <strong>granzymes<\/strong> \u2014 a group of enzymes that travel through the holes perforin created to start the apoptosis!<\/li>\n<li>Your cytotoxic T-Cells contain a <strong>Fas ligand<\/strong> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/4401179\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FasL<\/a>\u2014 a protein present in the membrane of CTLs. Regulatory T-Cells<\/h3>\n<p>Regulatory T-Cells are in <strong>charge of suppressing the proliferation of T-Cells and the production of cytokines, therefore preventing an autoimmune response of your cells<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>After cytotoxic T-Cells and helper T-Cells take care of pathogens, regulatory T-Cells <strong>stop them from accidentally targeting your own cells and causing autoimmune disorders!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The activity of regulatory T-Cells is <strong>particularly high in the case of infectious diseases<\/strong>, including HIV, malaria and tuberculosis.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Memory T-Cells<\/h3>\n<p>Even when your body gets rid of the infection and helper T-Cells and cytotoxic T-Cells are done with their job, one type of T-Cells stays in your body, lurking around \u2014 your memory T-Cells!<\/p>\n<p>When pathogens are gone, memory T-Cells stay around, and luckily so!<\/p>\n<p>Memory T-Cells have the ability to <strong>recognize specific antigens when reintroduced to them<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That means the next time the same pathogen attacks you, your body\u2019s response to it will be much faster than the first time!<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the antigen they encounter, memory <strong>T-Cells can multiply very fast and turn into either CD4+ or CD8+ T-Cells<\/strong>, helping your immune system get rid of the infection quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to memory T-Cells, your body can develop an <strong>immunological or immune tolerance<\/strong>, causing your immune system to become unresponsive to substances that would otherwise elicit its response.
