The answer is simple: an amazing storyline, strong dialogue and stunning artwork all merging together seamlessly. It\u2019s magic, really. But it also takes a lot of work to make it happen. Even some of the greatest comic books in history required multiple tweaks and revisions before gaining popularity among comic book fans. And some only ran for a short time before fizzling out altogether.<\/p>\n<p>By now, you should be working your way up to becoming a skilled artist in both <a href=\"http:\/\/2023.biowars.com\/blog\/biowars-art-academy-how-to-draw-comic-book-characters\/\">comic book characters<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/2023.biowars.com\/blog\/biowars-art-academy-how-to-draw-a-human-face-the-basics\/\">human faces<\/a> through our recent articles on these topics. There\u2019s a good chance you\u2019ve also come up with a winning idea after reading our articles on creating a <a href=\"https:\/\/2023.biowars.com\/blog\/comic-storyboard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">comic storyboard<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/2023.biowars.com\/blog\/create-your-own-comic-book-the-idea-or-concept\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">comic book concept<\/a>. How does this fit into the story?<\/li>\n<li>Are there any weaknesses your main character has that will be a constant struggle for them?<\/li>\n<li>How will evildoers exploit this weakness?<\/li>\n<li>What kind of personal growth do you see your main character experiencing over the storyline and how does it take place?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-full wp-image-15596 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/2023.biowars.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Biowars-Plot.jpg\" alt=\"Biowars Plot\" width=\"588\" height=\"620\" srcset=\"https:\/\/2023.biowars.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Biowars-Plot.jpg 588w, https:\/\/2023.biowars.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Biowars-Plot-285x300.jpg 285w, https:\/\/2023.biowars.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Biowars-Plot-440x464.jpg 440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 588px) 100vw, 588px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>The Importance of the Plot<\/h2>\n<p>Once that\u2019s hammered out, you\u2019ll next want to <a href=\"http:\/\/2023.biowars.com\/prologue\">build your plot<\/a> around these ideas. Each comic book you write should have a single plot, but should tie into a greater plot at play over the course of several comic book issues. Even then, not every major plot in comic books has always been resolved, so don\u2019t worry if you have one overarching plot that goes on and on over the course of your comic book.<\/p>\n<p>Another thing to remember: you don\u2019t have to be William Shakespeare to come up with a great plot. In general, comic books tend to tell their story through a combination of spectacular imagery and writing, which gives you a distinct advantage over the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century playwright. Just focus on making your story organized, consistent and fun and everything will turn out fine.<\/p>\n<p>A plot primarily consists of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A goal<\/li>\n<li>A consequence<\/li>\n<li>The costs of reaching the character\u2019s goal<\/li>\n<li>The payoffs of reaching the goal<\/li>\n<li>What it takes to make the goal happen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As you can see, having a single goal in mind for your main character is essential to creating an excellent plot for your story \u2013 and every goal has its upsides and downsides. If you\u2019re going to have your <a href=\"http:\/\/2023.biowars.com\/characters\/classification\/bio-warriors\">hero<\/a> cornering some bank robbers later in the story, then this is the time to show the bad guys plotting the upcoming heist.<\/p>\n<h3>Act Two<\/h3>\n<p>Act II is where the heist takes place and your hero gets wind of the situation. You\u2019ve introduced your characters, so let\u2019s put them into action! This is the most important part of the story, because it\u2019s ultimately what grabs your readers\u2019 attention, so make sure you put a lot of energy into writing up a bold and imaginative second act.<\/p>\n<h3>Act Three<\/h3>\n<p>The third act is all about resolution, but it\u2019s only after maintaining the developing climax from act II and finally capturing or defeating the <a href=\"http:\/\/2023.biowars.com\/characters\/classification\/microbes-mutants\">villains<\/a> during the second half of act III. If you drop your story off too early, your readers could very easily lose interest after thumbing through a few more pages.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the formula in its simplest terms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide some background<\/li>\n<li>Have your hero make the chase<\/li>\n<li>Put an end to the conflict<\/li>\n<li>Prepare your readers for upcoming adventures\u00a0by hinting at a continuing\u00a0storyline<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Soon you\u2019ll have them eating out of your hands as they wait for the next issue to be released.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What makes a great comic book?
