The Green Goblin vs. The Joker: The Genesis And The Characters’ History
Before we delve deep into the discussion about the Green Goblin’s and the Joker’s powers and abilities, let’s take a look at the backstories of both characters.
Becoming The Green Goblin
The Green Goblin was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #14 in 1964.
He’s the alter ego of several characters, but the best-known incarnation is the first one — that of Norman Osborn.
Norman is a wealthy industrialist and inventor. He’s also the father of Peter Parker’s best friend — Harry Osborne (Harry was the second incarnation of the Green Goblin!).
Norman is a scientist and a co-founder of the chemical company named OsCorp Industries.
At one point, his company started to conduct biological enhancements research, which made Osborn all the more powerful.

In his experiments, he used humans as test subjects.
At one point, Osborn decides to test a strength-enhancing formula on himself. The experiment goes wrong and the Goblin serum explodes in his face. As a result of the accident, Osborn emerges smarter and stronger, but he loses his moral compass as well as his sanity.
This was the beginning of Osborn’s transformation into the Green Goblin.
As the Green Goblin, Osborn wears a Halloween-inspired green and purple costume, rides a hoverboard-like device called a Goblin Glider and uses a variety of high-tech gadgets and weapons (we’ll talk in detail about these soon!).
The Green Goblin is known for his impressive intellect, strategic planning, and sadistic sense of humor.
As the Green Goblin, Osborn is heavily involved with criminals because of his own twisted psychology and desire for power. He’s a brilliant scientist and businessman, but he’s also deeply unstable and narcissistic, and the exposure to the serum only worsened his pre-existing mental health issues.
Becoming the Green Goblin allows Osborn to act on his most destructive impulses and commit crimes without fear of repercussions.
He sees himself as a superior being, above the law and society’s rules. He can also control other criminals, which further boosts his sense of power and superiority.
Over time, the Green Goblin becomes one of Spider-Man’s greatest enemies. He’s also famous for being the first villain to discover Spidey’s secret identity!
Becoming The Joker
The Joker first appeared in Batman #1 in 1940. The character was created by writer Bill Finger and artist Bob Kane.

Some versions suggest that he was once a failed comedian known as Jack Napier, who became a criminal mastermind after he fell into a tank of chemicals. The chemicals permanently turned his hair green, bleached his skin white and twisted his face into a grin.
In other versions, the Joker is chaotic for no other reason other than to hurt others.
The Joker is known for his unpredictability, his willingness to commit heinous acts of violence and chaos, and his obsession to prove that anyone can be driven insane with enough trauma.
The Joker is completely alienated from society and he believes that Batman is his only friend.
The Clown Prince of Crime is ready to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals. He doesn’t care about the lives of others and is willing to torture everyone both mentally and physically to get what he wants.

Similarities Between The Green Goblin And The Joker
Although the two iconic villains belong to different universes, there are several similarities that the Green Goblin and the Joker share.
1. Mental Instability
Both the Green Goblin and the Joker are depicted as suffering from psychological disorders.
The two are mentally unstable, and that characteristic makes them particularly dangerous.
Osborn did become strong and powerful after his exposure to an enhancing serum, but that “glow-up” didn’t come without a price — the transformation drove him insane.
As the Green Goblin, Osborn also shows signs of delusions, paranoia and violent outbursts — a dangerous combo that leads him to commit horrific crimes and kill the innocent.
The Joker is a psychopathic killer with no regard for human life.
He’s merciless and ready to target anyone who crosses his path.
The Clown Prince of Crime has no empathy. His behavior is unpredictable and chaotic, and his actions often reflect his desire to cause havoc and destruction.
2. Twisted Sense Of Humor
Both characters have a twisted and sadistic sense of humor, which only adds to their sinister personas and makes their characters more complex.
The Joker enjoys making puns while he’s committing crimes; he also likes to make twisted jokes at his own expense:
“I’m not mad at all! I’m just differently sane!”
Just like the Joker, the Green Goblin also enjoys making sarcastic jokes in the midst of the terror he creates.
For example, in Spider-Man, when he sabotages a trolley car filled with children and kidnaps Mary Jane, the Goblin cheerfully starts to sing:
“The itsy bitsy spider went up the water spout. Down came the goblin and took the spider out.”
The Joker knows better than most that all it takes is one bad day to drive a normal man insane. Revisit a classic story along with a host of never-before-published artwork in ABSOLUTE BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE, out now: https://t.co/8sG5HNE8hj pic.twitter.com/osmyVoCc2y

3. Intelligence
The Goblin and the Joker are both highly intelligent.
They’re aware of their genius-level intellect, which makes them all the more arrogant and narcissistic.
In some storylines, Osborn even belittles his son, Harry, because he’s neither smart nor strong like his father — or like his friend, Peter Parker, whose genius Osborn often praises.
Osborn’s intelligence allows him to create advanced technology and strategically plan his next move.
His intellect also makes him a master manipulator and allows him to outsmart his enemies.
For example, Osborn created the Thunderbolts — a team of former supervillains who became heroes. Osborn created the team as part of a plot to gain more power. He disguised himself as a hero and led the team, gaining the trust of the public and the government.
The Joker is also a terrific manipulator and his intelligence allows him to easily control others to reach his goals.
If he wants to make others obey him, he’ll easily find a way to make them listen to his orders.
Although the Joker’s actions are often unpredictable, he can be calculated in his schemes.
In The Dark Knight, the Joker outwits Batman and the police at every turn. He sets up elaborate traps and stays two steps ahead of everyone. For instance, he makes a ferry full of civilians and a ferry full of convicts play a game of Russian roulette with each other.
He also wants to force Batman to reveal his true identity, so he kills people and blows up buildings around Gotham without anyone being able to stop him.
The Joker’s intelligence is on full display throughout the film, making him one of the most memorable and iconic villains in cinematic history.

Differences Between The Green Goblin And The Joker
The Green Goblin and the Joker have a lot in common, but the two characters differ from each other in a lot of ways.
1. Methods
The Goblin and the Joker are both merciless —, there’s no doubt about that.
However, the way they carry out their heinous crimes is different.
The Green Goblin is more calculated and methodical in his approach, relying on his intelligence and planning to take down his enemies, i.e., his number one enemy — Spider-Man.
The Goblin sees Spidey as his biggest adversary, so he’s mostly focused on trying to hurt him and the people he loves. He cold-bloodedly kills Gwen Stacy to hurt Spider-Man, so, yeah, he’ll do horrible things to get what he wants.
The Joker, on the other hand, is more unpredictable than the Goblin. The fact that he revels in the chaos he creates pushes him to often act on impulse.
For instance, in The Dark Knight, he interrupts a meeting between the mob bosses and proceeds to improvise a plan to kill Batman.
He also sets fire to a large pile of money on a whim, which confuses the mobsters.
These actions demonstrate the Joker’s tendency to act impulsively and without regard for the consequences, which can’t be said about the Green Goblin.

2. Motivations
The Green Goblin is mostly driven by his desire for power and control.
He’s a narcissist who’s also obsessed with defeating Spider-Man and becoming the most powerful criminal in New York City.
The Joker, as we mentioned, is often motivated by his pure desire to create anarchy, rather than a specific desire for power.
He’s unpredictable and delights in causing suffering to others.
The Joker’s ultimate goal is to spread anarchy and disrupt the social order. On some occasions, he appears to believe that life is meaningless and seeks to prove this through his actions.
For example, in The Killing Joke, he says that anyone, no matter how good they may be, can be driven to madness by a single traumatic event. He believes that life has no inherent meaning and that anyone’s sense of morality is ultimately meaningless.
3. Equipment
Norman Osborn, a.k.a., the Green Goblin is a scientist and is prone to using advanced weaponry and equipment in his battles against Spider-Man.
Some of his most iconic gadgets include:
- Goblin Glider: This is a flying device that looks like a hovering skateboard. The Goblin certainly likes to travel in style.
- Pumpkin Bombs: These are small grenades shaped like pumpkins.
- Razor Bats: These are sharp, boomerang-like weapons that resemble Japanese shuriken.
- Finger Claws: These are retractable claws that the Goblin wears on his fingers for close combat.
The Joker typically doesn’t use much equipment during fights.
He does like to create elaborate schemes and traps, and outsmart his enemies using his wits, but he has used some items here and there, such as:
- Acid: The Joker often wears acid-spraying lapel flowers that can give him an advantage over his enemies.
- Joy buzzers: These are small, hand-held devices that give electric shocks to those the Joker shakes hands with.
- Explosives: The Joker sometimes uses explosives, such as dynamite and C4.
- Joker venom: This is a deadly toxin that causes the Joker’s victims to laugh to death.
4. Relationship With Spider-Man And Batman
The Green Goblin and the Joker have different relationships with their biggest superhero adversaries.
The Green Goblin has a personal vendetta against Spider-Man. He’s a hero who prevents the Goblin from becoming the criminal lord of New York City.
Norman Osborn also knows Spider-Man’s true identity; he knows that behind the mask hides his son’s best friend and that further fuels his desire to target Peter and everyone he cares about, including his friends and loved ones.
The Joker’s relationship with Batman is often portrayed as more complex, with a level of mutual respect between the two characters.
The Joker does see Batman as his primary enemy but, he also views him as a friend in a way.
The Joker thinks highly of Batman because of his impressive intellectual and physical qualities.
He often tries to break Batman’s code of ethics and turn him to his own twisted way of thinking; but ultimately, he knows that Batman will never give in to his demands or become like him.
The Green Goblin vs. The Joker — Who Would Win In A Fight?
In a one-on-one physical battle, the Green Goblin would likely have the advantage over the Joker.
The Goblin is physically stronger and better at hand-to-hand combat. He could easily hurt the Joker with his bare hands.
Plus, the Goblin has a glider that has knives and automatic rapid-fire bullets installed, and that alone gives him a tremendous advantage over the Joker.
Sure, the Joker has venom that makes his enemies laugh to death, but the Goblin’s mask would protect him from it; or the Goblin could simply fly away from the Joker on his glider and remain unharmed.
Let’s not forget the fact that the Green Goblin can also regenerate his tissues and heal, which makes him hard to beat.
In the battle of wits, the Joker’s psychological manipulation and unpredictability could give him the edge.
The Goblin would probably find it hard to predict the Joker’s moves, but that would hardly suffice for the Joker to defeat the green villain.
We are pretty confident that the Green Goblin would defeat the Joker if they were ever to cross paths.
A Recap On The Green Goblin vs. The Joker
The Green Goblin and the Joker are iconic villains that spread fear and terror wherever they go.
Both are violent and terrifying, but despite their similarities, the two are led by different motivations in their criminal activities.
Norman Osborn, a.k.a., the Green Goblin is methodical and driven by his desire to gain as much power as possible, while the Joker creates mayhem for his own amusement.
If the two supervillains were to face each other in a battle, we believe that the Goblin could easily take down the Clown Prince of Crime.
